Growing up with a deeply addicted mom was hard, but it wasn’t the hardest thing I would ever face…
How a Christian shelter for abused mothers like Wayside’s Lifespring Ministry is transforming lives.
…Or even being sent to live in a foster home,
It was the painful years of sexual abuse I was forced to endure by my foster brother.
That experience led me to harbor a deep distrust of men and later to make many poor choices of my own. Soon I found myself in and out of abusive relationships. One after another. I was incredibly lonely, living in the constant pain and isolation that had become my life. I felt like I was the only person on Earth.
… I even tried to commit suicide.
But God had another plan . . . and He would be my Deliverer. He sent one of my cousins to save me! And then He led me to Lifespring Ministry for women at Wayside Cross! It was just like He promised . . .
To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning… ~ Isaiah 61:2-4
When I first came here to live, it was nothing like I could ever imagine. It felt safe, like I found a safe-haven for me, and my children. And for the very first time in my life, I started to feel like I finally found a home.
But it wouldn’t be easy here. There were classes, training, working through some personal stuff, and learning how to take better care of my kids.
Through Lifespring’s program and classes, I learned about God and His love for me. I’ve even learned about all my past hurts and how it shaped who I had become.
More importantly, they taught me to see myself the way God does.
Eventually, I began to understand what He was calling me to become, as a mom, and as a child of God. Lifespring has taught me what true love really is, how to overcome the past and to live for HIM! That’s my real victory, at least here on Earth.
For people like me, it’s easy to see how Christ is glorified through the staff and volunteers who give their time so generously.
This place has become such a big part of my life now, I can’t imagine not volunteering or being part of it in the future. And I know that my life and my children’s new future is only possible because of Jesus, and people reading my story and supporting these ministries.
God has laid something big on my heart, not just for my kids or myself. Eventually, I hope to help other women find out who they really are in Christ . . . Fearfully and wonderfully made!
